The server address has not yet been retrieved

Hi all, I am new to the world of Tribes2 and I'd like to play this game -- every1 told me it's such fun to play.

I installed and configured the game, apllied the latest tribenext patch, and applied the exception to the firewall. When I click on 'create account' i wait for about 1 min and then the message 'The server address has not yet been retrieved' appears and the only option i have is to click on 'Cancel'. I tried several times. Nothing but the message.

I read the whole FAQ (spent a couple of hours verifying all the issues):
  • found and applied the imagecfg.exe patch for my dual core dell inspiron laptop (specs below)
  • Used the server checker -- the servers are online.
  • Tried disabling the firewall -- no result.
  • Also forwarded the ports as suggested by the GameConfig website (though I later realized that the account server doesn't need any open port).

PC SPECS

Computer - Dell Inspiron 6400
CPU - Intel Centrino Duo T5500 @ 1.66 Ghz
O.s. - Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition, Service Pack 3
Memory - 2 Ghz SODIMM DDR 2 SDRAM @ 667 Mhz

Hope to give enough info.
Hope someone can find the solution.
Thank you for your kind attention.

  • This error tends to only occur with either a firewall misconfiguration or an AntiVirus program that checks HTTP connections.
See if your router has a firewall built-in, or if your AntiVirus has an option to scan links/http...
  • If you can see the contents of http://www.tribesnext.com/auth in your web browser, and a list of IP addresses http://master.tribesnext.com/list in your web browser, the problem is some sort of software firewall or antivirus program running on your machine.
  • Hello, thx for the quick reply.
Just about 1 hour after posting I suddenly found the account server online...i can't really figure out the reason. I did move some firewall options but then i reset them after every try. Anyway, after recovering from the shock :o I created an account and made a 1024 bit key. Then I had big problems viewing the server list...again tried everything with my firewall but had no luck.

I know how my antivirus does tcp/http packet scanning and how handles the application traffic exceptions. All the options seem to be correct. I also began to modify some less network-related options just to see the effects on the traffic (of course no effect). I had a look at the default connections Tribes2 opens when launched and they seem ok.

Yes, i can see both of them in my browser.

Anyway, i deleted everything (including my account key) and made a fresh install, and guess what...The server address has not yet been retrieved. It seems a firewall issue, definitely. I've been keeping on triying over and over by tweaking my firewall options in any way until now. :-[
I will delete and reinstall again later, and see what happens.
  • man TN is picky about software firewalls. i resorted to just uninstalling the whole thing and reinforcing my routers firewall. and if your antivirus does packet checkin, try adding an exclusion for the game.
  • Hi. I completely removed my antivirus and got ONLINE message for the account server. Then reinstalled all of my antivirus components, except the firewall. Surprisingly, the game still gave me that irritating message. This means that the av firewall has nothing to do with the game! Only the resident module tracking the open files could be the cause now. I disabled it, but the message appears anyway. If I completely remove the resident module, I wouldn't have any reason to keep the av itself installed. The other modules check for incoming/outcoming mail, web browser navigation, hard disk scan scheduling, etc... so I can't suspect of them.
I will write in my av forum. I gave a look in there once, and found some people asking for game related issues such as Punkbuster.
    Any suggestions are welcome...
