game won't start, just gives me error message about virtual memory.
so, if anyone knows the appropriate range of virtual memory, please share.

I would set vmem to around 3 gigs and try again.

That error message seems to be unique. Verify your installer and executable against the values in

solved! solution: redownload.
don't think i did anything differently, so possibly a botched download the first time.
virtual memory settings (after trying all sorts of different ranges) are back at automated settings, so don't think that was actually the issue at all.

Sometimes when vmem is more than around 3 gigs with a M$ os some apps have an issue.
