Nope that doesn't work. You have to launch it through the Tribes 2 Online shortcut.
(Or the SierraUp.exe)
When ingame, go to the 'Game' tab and then choose the 'Join' tab in the upper left corner. Choose a server and have fun I would also recommend you to read the manual if you are completely new to tribes. You can find it in the \Tribes2\Manual folder.
Those two posts are the best advice you can find on these forums. Stick with it and you'll develop into a good player. If you take the other advice you find here, you'll wind up thinking everyone is cheating.
