Map packs?

I keep reading everywhere about map packs. I've never downloaded 1 before. Do I need to? I play on the Goon Haven server, and every time a map starts it just takes a few seconds to load. Is the only reason to download a map pack to play on a server with custom maps?

    Yes, unless you plan on hosting, in which case you'll need the map packs for the maps to be available on your server.
